Meet Family Lawyer Douglas Cohn

Douglas Cohn has been practicing family law since 1985, after graduating from the University of Maryland (1980) and Vermont Law School (1984). He practiced in Massachusetts for one year before relocating to Montpelier, Vermont, where he clerked in two state attorney offices and then began a concentration in family law.

While in Vermont, he was a member of the Washington County Family Court Project, which enacted various new programs within family court; he was a Family Court Magisterte; served as a guardian ad litem in divorce cases; and represented parties in juvenile matters. During much of the 1990s, attorney Cohn served as both adjunct and core faculty at Woodbury College in Montpelier, Vermont, where he taught family law, legal research and writing, legal analysis and other classes relating to the practice of law.

In 1998, Attorney Cohn was appointed to the trial court bench as a Family Court Magistrate for the state of Vermont where he adjudicated over cases involving alimony, child support, visitation, property, children’s issues and domestic abuse matters. During his time on the bench he continued to teach seminars to local attorneys focused on various aspects of family law.

After leaving the bench in 2004, he joined Vermont’s biggest law firm, Downs Rachlin Martin, in their newly formed family law division. Upon deciding to move back to Maryland, he was employed by Brodsky, Greenblatt and Renehan, Chartered, before opening his own practice.

Attorney Cohn has been involved in many community activities during his career, including serving on the boards of the Washington County Family Center in Vermont and his local synagogue. Since moving to Maryland, he has been involved with the community and has served on the Board of the Montgomery County Child Care Association for several years. He has been a Little League umpire and soccer coach and has been involved with various charitable organizations.

Joan Weiss, Of Counsel

Joan M. Weiss has been a family law attorney for over 20 years. After earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia (1979) and a law degree from George Washington University (1983), Ms. Weiss served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Frank E. Schwelb and as a prosecutor in the District of Columbia. Since then she has spent her legal career helping separating families resolve their disputes through mediation, negotiation and, when necessary, litigation. Ms. Weiss is a Family Law Facilitator for the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Maryland, and is trained in mediation and collaborative law. Ms. Weiss is a co-founder of A Smarter Divorce Mediation Services, a team-approach to mediation that helps couples make the transition from the uncertainty of separation to the security of a fair and effective settlement

Ms. Weiss, originally from New Jersey, has been in the Washington DC area for three decades. She lives in Montgomery County, Maryland where she was an active volunteer in the public schools her children attended, and where she has been a board member for numerous community and non-profit organizations.
